Motorcycle/Motorbike Tours & Touring FAQ
Why would I want to do a guided tour, rather than planning it myself?
Guided tours have several advantages. The tour guides know the areas and will lead you on roads and to places that you might not have ventured to on your own, so you will enjoy experiences that other visitors to the region often miss. Also, tours give you the opportunity to share a great motorcycling vacation with other enthusiasts from many parts of the world and develop friendships that may last a lifetime.
Do I require certain experience to participate in a guided tour?
You will need to take a close look at the different types of tours offered. Some are more challenging than others. The tour operator can give you a better feel for the riding skills required. For safety reasons, no one will ever try to push you past your own limitations.
Do I have to wear a helmet?
For your own safety, and per California law, and our insurance company, you and your passenger are required to wear a certified helmet at all times when you ride our motorcycle.
Do I need to bring my own helmet?
Helmets are provided for riders and passengers without any fees. We always recommend you bring your own helmet for fitment and comfort. If you rent a motorcycle with intercom or CB and want to use these features, you will need to bring your own helmet equipped with speakers, microphone, and connection cords.
What kind of clothes should I bring?
You should bring a variety of clothes. While California is known for its warm and moderate temperatures, riding along the Pacific Coast with its cool ocean breezes means you’ll need a good jacket. Deserts will bring blazing heat in July, August and early September; the Sierra Nevada Mountains can be freezing cold in April, May and late October. A good rule is dress in layers so you can adjust as the weather changes, since it’s easier to change your clothes than for you to change the weather.
Do I need to bring rain gear?
Absolutely, positively 100% bring rain gear!! If you do not have any, we can rent it to you. We always blame the rain on the person that did not have rain gear.
How much luggage can I bring?
Some of the guided tours include a chase vehicle to carry your gear, while others do not. Also the type of motorcycle you rent will dictate how much gear you can carry. If you are riding 2 up, and heading to the mountains where the weather can be very changeable, the Dyna Low Rider is probably not a good Idea!! You will do much better choosing an Electra Glide. If you are planning to spend more time here before or after your motorcycle adventure, we will be very happy to store additional luggage and clothing for you. For convenience, you can also ship your luggage and gear to us ahead of time. We will be very happy to store them until you arrive, and then ship them home for you when you depart.
How do I get transfers to and from the airport, hotel, and pick up the motorcycle?
We can arrange all your transfers from San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland airports to our shop. The cost for the transfers varies depending on the size of the group and the length of your motorcycle rental. We will be very happy to provide a quote for you (and you may be surprised – it may even be free).
What bike is best if I ride with a passenger?
The most comfortable bikes for passengers are the Electra Glide, Road Glide, Road King, and Heritage Softail, or Goldwing.
Can I swap bikes with another person in my group?
You can ONLY swap motorcycles with someone that has also rented a motorcycle from us. You will have to sign each others rental contracts in this case. If you should happen to damage the other person's motorcycle it will be your responsibility to cover the damage.
How many miles do we ride each day?
This depends on the tour you choose. The tour operator can give you all the details, along with the itinerary.
